3M Thor™ 3-D, Drop, Decelerate, Descend Retractable
Item # MD-50 - 50 ft.
Item # MD-100 - 100 ft.
Thor 3D redefines fall protection in three life saving steps. Drop, Decelerate. Descend. The retractable controlled descent device integrates the fall arrest functions of retractable lifeline and the speed controlled descent of an automatic self-rescue device. The unit will arrest a fall as quickly and efficiently as a regular retractable and then automatically lowers the person down at a controlled speed of descent of 3 feet per second. The device limits the impact force of an arrest to less than 500 lbs. At a speed of 3 feet per second, the person can land on a safe surface in the upright position without injury. Once the person is disconnected from the cable of the device, the cable will retract like that of a regular retractable. The device is intended for use by a person with a combined weight of between 75 and 400 lbs. Product meets all applicable ANSI, and OSHA, and CSA regulations in effect at date of manufacture.

Operation: The retractable controlled descent device is intended for use in areas where there is no obstruction in the space below the work level that may injure the person, in the event of a descent, to the safe level below. The safe level must be a hard surface, and free of obstacles such as rebar, energized wires, etc.
Before Use: The device must be inspected daily before use and tested for proper functioning. To test, pull on the cable briskly until it “locks” and requires a strong pull to extract more cable. The change in mode should occur within two feet of brisk extraction; if it fails to change mode, do not use, and tag for servicing.
Inspection: The device should be thoroughly inspected by a competent person at least once a year, more frequently in severe environments, or when in continuous use. The inspection results should be recorded in a log. The manufacturer recommends that the device be sent to an authorized service center every two years for inspection and servicing.
Storage: The retractable controlled descent device should be stored in a cool, dry, clean environment free of corrosive chemicals and organic vapors. Thoroughly inspect the device after prolonged storage.
